“Schoofs’s courageous performance, elevated the evening to an entirely different level of sophistication.” – I Care if You Listen
“Fantastic theater” – The Wall Street Journal
Live performance at MATA Festival 2015, The Kitchen, NYC
Performance by Amanda Schoofs (voice) and Bearthoven (piano, contrabass, and percussion)
Intimate Addictions is a visual and poetic score for any performance, no matter how radical. The composition is a series of double-sided cards that explore brutal inharmonic aggression stabilized by exquisite, forbidden beauty; pure sustained pitch embedded with grating, metallic noise; and alluring, intimate phrases interwoven with raucous, glitched symmetry. Acting as both a catalyst and a restraint, the score’s poetic directives and raw painted marks were created to be equally explicit and obscure, in an effort to inspire distinct sonic qualities. The score has a unique mobile structure that actuates diverse possibilities and invites you to embrace spontaneity in performance, while demanding an intensely personal and intimate exploration of sound.
Intimate Addictions was curated by Pulitzer Prize winner Du Yun on the world-renowned MATA Festival at The Kitchen in NYC. Major national performances include: University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Wind Ensemble and Contemporary Music Ensemble, a solo percussion tour of the American South, and several evening-length performances by the IA Ensemble. Internationally, Intimate Addictions was presented throughout Germany during Amanda’s Salem2Salem artist residency at Schloss Salem, in Bodenseekreis.
A studio recording of Intimate Addictions has been recorded by the IA Ensemble and is awaiting release in 2019.
